Chester is a charming historic county town in Cheshire, England. It was originally settled by the Romans as a military fort in the first century AD, and the work of the ancient Romans can still be seen today.
The town is known for having the most complete and well-preserved Roman city walls in the UK, the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain where gladiators fought to the death, the oldest racecourse in the world, and the famous picturesque white-and-black buildings, including the Chester Rows.
Chester’s streets are small and compact, making it easy to visit all the landmarks on foot. You could easily visit all the places mentioned in this post in a day and then make a day trip to Liverpool, where there is more to see and do.
Here are my top recommendations for visiting Chester for a day or a weekend getaway.
1. Walk Along the City Walls
Take a leisurely stroll along the impressive two-mile long City Walls of Chester, built over 2000 years ago by the Romans!
Trust me, it’s the top must-do activity in Chester, England.
Access to the oldest, longest, and most well-preserved city walls in Britain is free. You can start your walk from one of the four main gateways: Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate, and Bridgegate. Alternatively, there are many other lovely starting points around the city.
The views from this historical vantage point are simply breathtaking, and the rich history is absolutely captivating.
2. Wander Around The Rows While Shopping
The Chester Rows are unique to Chester and the world! They consist of two levels of shops, restaurants, offices, and cafes. You’ll see the ones on the street level, and the ones on the “Row level” are on the upper walkway reached by steps.
They have covered walkways on the first floor with the shops set back from the street. You’ll need to go up or down a few steps to access many of these shops.
Even if shopping isn’t your primary goal, the Chester Rows promise a captivating opportunity to immerse yourself in all the architecture, history, and beauty of Chester!
Fun Fact: Even though Chester dates back to the Roman Times, a lot of the architecture looks medieval. Like the beautiful white-and-black buildings you will see around the city. Although the building style is medieval, the buildings actually date to the later Victorian period. That was when the medieval-style buildings became fashionable again.
These charming buildings make Chester very memorable, don’t you think?
3. Visit the Chester Cathedral
I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful cathedral when I attended my cousin’s university graduation, and I must say, it’s a must-see attraction.
Located in the heart of the city, Chester Cathedral is a breathtaking building where you can light a candle in honor of a loved one, engage in quiet prayer, or simply admire its beauty and rich history.
There are several different guided tours available if you want to learn more about the history and architecture of the cathedral. They also have a tour where you can climb the stairs to the top of the tower to take in panoramic views of the city.

4. Snap a Photo of the Eastgate Clock
The Eastgate Clock is one of the most popular and beloved landmarks in Chester. It is said to be the second-most photographed clock in the UK, after Big Ben in London.
It’s a stunning clock. I can see why people photograph it so much!
Admire this stunning timepiece as you stroll along the city walls or as you explore the main shopping street.
Be sure to take photos from the street and climb the stairs to get up close to admire the beautiful details also!
5. Have Lunch at Chester Market
Chester Market is not really a market but more of a food hall. And that is fine by me!
I think having a variety of food options makes it a great place to come with a group of friends or family.

6. Enjoy a Day at the Races
The Chester Racecourse was established in 1539 and has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest operational racecourse in the world!
You can view the grounds during your walk along the city walls. Or grab your friends, dress up in your finest attire, and spend an exciting afternoon at the Chester Races!

7. See The Chester Roman Ampitheatre
Chester Amphitheater is the largest Roman Amphitheatre so far uncovered in Britain.
Only part of it has been excavated, so it may not look very impressive. However, it was once a massive arena that could hold 7,000 people!
As you walk through the area that was once the arena floor, try to imagine the many gladiators who stood and battled there!

8. Walk Through the Roman Gardens
The Roman Gardens is a small outdoor space displaying Roman artifacts that are over 2000 years old.
The collection of ruins was discovered throughout the city and placed in the gardens.
It’s located near the Roman Amphitheatre, so you can easily walk over to take a look at the gardens.
